Artist’s Statement

“I am an artist because as I have discovered for myself ‘beauty’ in a world where there was no beauty, experienced for myself ‘love’ in a world where there was no love, and ‘freedom’ in a world where there was no freedom of choice. All I want to do is express the journey, the growth, the change and the transformation. I do this visually. All I want to do is to help others see ‘beauty’ in their lives, beauty in themselves and beauty in the world around them. To help others ‘see’ who are ‘blind’, to help others move who are stuck; to help others see beauty, value, purpose and truth.”

Biography - Joy Tatt  - ‘Joybells Artist’ January 2016

What wonderful experiences the past 26 years have given me, after my introduction to fine art. I am an Australian artist and arts educator, currently residing in Regional Victoria.

My enjoyment and satisfaction always came from anything associated with creative activity and learning. My original area of study was Commercial Art, and it is in this discipline that I worked professionally. It was my growing love of art that guided me to expand my knowledge further. I began studying the traditions of representational art in 1989 with McNeill Academy of Realist Art, and developed my appreciation with a variety of private tutors in Melbourne and locally. My education encompasses both formal and informal study, and on-the-job training. My influences range from Holbein to Rembrandt, from Vermeer to the Australian Impressionists to the Pre-Raphaelites.

My paintings allow me to express my loves… Beauty, Harmony, Elegance, Emotion and Truth. I love the quote by John Keats, ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever.’ What really motivates me is seeing the beauty around me, and realising truth in life. My art is based on observation, learning, experiences, and a deep respect and celebration for all people and places. I want my art to inspire, uplift, enrich, motivate, surprise and bring joy. When I am painting I am in a place that brings me closer to all these things and to God the very essence and source of life. When I am touched by something, I like to see how well I can capture it visually. If someone else likes it, my joy is doubled.

I have experience in all mediums, miniatures, printmaking, photography, graphic design, sign writing, picture framing, cake decorating, and ceramic and bronze sculpture. In the early years I bought Melbourne artists to teach in Bendigo and then co-founded the Bendigo Art Society (May 1994) now operating for 22 years. I have worked for colleges, galleries, graphic houses, art supply stores and many other organizations.

I have won numerous awards and my work features in private collections in the UK, France, Africa and Australia. My journey also took me for a time as artist in residence in London, and to be printed in the Australian publication, ‘Miniature Art Of Australia, Past and Present’ 2000

Developing my own skills is not only a necessity but also an absolute joy and privilege to be on this journey. I love to be productive, and feel fascinated with the process of creating visually. I have just completed a business course with Artists Transformation School (Dec 2015) and am currently working towards my first solo exhibition, being focused on simplifying tones and creating mood in the subjects I love. Started some years ago, I will also be looking to complete my memoirs and the illustrations that accompany them.

After I began to learn, teaching was a natural progression for me, doing so both professionally and privately since May 1993, passing my knowledge on to hundreds of students. I have learned so much and I love to help others explore their world of creativity.

Come and visit my studio, explore my works, and feel inspired.
